Soldier Summit is both a mountain pass in the Wasatch Mountains and a ghost town located at the pass, sitting at the extreme southwest corner of Wasatch County where U.S. Route 6 and the former Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad mainline — now operated by Union Pacific — cross between the Wasatch Front and Price. The pass has been a critical transportation corridor since Mormon pioneer settlement, and the town that grew up around it served both the state highway department and railroad operations for decades before being abandoned. The name dates to 1861 when a group of soldiers commanded by General Philip St. George Cooke were caught in a severe snowstorm crossing the summit, with some perishing and being buried there. Today Soldier Summit is a popular stop for railroad enthusiasts who come to photograph the dramatic Gilluly loops — a series of horseshoe curves on the western approach to the summit — as well as the California Zephyr Amtrak passenger train that still uses this historic route. The surrounding high-elevation terrain offers dramatic scenery, solitude, and open land that appeals to hunters, recreationists, and buyers seeking remote Utah acreage.
