Mapleton is a city in Utah County, part of the Provo-Orem Metropolitan Area, first settled in 1850 as an agricultural extension of Springville — originally known as Union Bench. Incorporated in 1948 after charting its own course from Springville beginning in 1901, Mapleton has carefully preserved its semi-rural character even as development has transformed neighboring communities. The city sits east of Interstate 15 along U.S. Route 89, and that separation from the freeway has been a key factor in keeping Mapleton more rural and spacious than Springville and Spanish Fork to the south.
