Copperton is a census-designated place and township in Salt Lake County, located at the mouth of Bingham Canyon about 17 miles southwest of Salt Lake City. The community has a fascinating origin — it was established in 1926 by the Utah Copper Company as a purpose-built "model city" for its employees, designed as a showplace for company-subsidized family life with planned housing and community amenities. Construction of homes ended in the 1930s and company-furnished housing concluded in 1955, after which a private developer managed the properties. Today Copperton stands as the last remaining residential community associated with the Kennecott Bingham Canyon Mine — one of the largest open-pit copper mines in the world — after the nearby town of Lark was demolished in 1980. That unique history gives Copperton a character unlike any other community in Salt Lake County, with a small, close-knit residential feel set against a dramatic canyon backdrop.
