Where Is Colton, Utah?

Colton is a ghost town in southeastern Utah County, about 6 miles from Soldier Summit along U.S. Route 6 through Spanish Fork Canyon, between Spanish Fork and Price.

Colton History

First settled in 1883 as Pleasant Valley Junction, the town was a key railroad junction where the Pleasant Valley Railroad connected the mining town of Winter Quarters to the Denver and Rio Grande Western mainline. It quickly grew to include a store, a hotel, and five saloons, and mining of ozokerite — a naturally occurring wax — added to the local economy.

Renamed Colton before 1898 after railroad official William F. Colton, the town survived the 1900 Scofield mine disaster and burned and was rebuilt three times. Its decline came as diesel locomotives ended the need for helper engines to push freight over Soldier Summit. By the 1950s railroad operations had ceased and most buildings were gone.

Today the canyon land along US-6 offers dramatic scenery and open terrain for hunters, recreationists, and rural land buyers looking for affordable Utah County acreage.
