Colton is a ghost town in Utah County located about 6 miles south of Soldier Summit along U.S. Route 6 through Spanish Fork Canyon, between Spanish Fork and Price. First settled in 1883 as Pleasant Valley Junction, the town served as a critical railroad junction where the Pleasant Valley Railroad connected the mining town of Winter Quarters to the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad mainline. The junction quickly grew to include a store, hotel, and five saloons, and the mining of ozokerite — a naturally occurring wax mineral — added to the local economy. Renamed Colton before 1898 in honor of railroad official William F. Colton, the town survived the devastating 1900 Scofield mine disaster and burned and was rebuilt three times over its active years. Colton's decline came gradually as diesel locomotives eliminated the need for helper engines to push freight trains over Soldier Summit, removing the primary reason for the town's existence. By the 1950s railroad operations had ceased and most buildings were removed. Today the surrounding canyon land along U.S. Route 6 offers dramatic scenery and open terrain that appeals to hunters, recreationists, and rural land buyers looking for affordable Utah County acreage.
