Alta is a small town in Salt Lake County, nestled in Little Cottonwood Canyon as part of the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Area. The town has a rich history dating back to the 1860s when it was founded to house miners working the silver claims of the Emma and Flagstaff mines. After the mines played out and a devastating fire and avalanche swept through in the 1870s and 1880s, Alta was largely abandoned — until Norwegian skiing legend Alf Engen helped develop it as a ski destination in 1935, with the first ski lift opening in 1938. Today Alta Ski Area draws around half a million visitors a year, celebrated worldwide for its deep powder and its long-standing tradition as a skiers-only mountain.
