Brighton is a community in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Salt Lake County, located about 30 miles from downtown Salt Lake City within the Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Home to Brighton Ski Resort — the first ski resort in Utah and one of the first in the entire United States — the area has been a destination for outdoor recreation since 1936 when members of the Alpine Ski Club built the original rope tow using wire and an old elevator motor. The resort was named for Thomas W. Brighton, credited with constructing the first buildings in the area. Today Brighton is celebrated as a local favorite known for exceptional powder snow, extensive night skiing, world-class backcountry access, and a no-frills approach that keeps the focus squarely on skiing and snowboarding.
