Orem is one of the largest cities in Utah County, with nearly 100,000 residents at the 2020 census. Long known as "Family City USA," it offers established neighborhoods, good access to shopping and schools, and home prices that are often lower than in the newer cities to the north. Utah Valley University, the state's largest university by enrollment, is in Orem, and Mount Timpanogos rises right above the east side of town.

Where Is Orem, Utah?

Orem sits along I-15 between Provo to the south and Lindon to the north, with Vineyard and Utah Lake to the west. FrontRunner stops in Orem, and the UVX bus line runs between UVU, BYU and downtown Provo. Provo Canyon opens at the northeast corner of the city, so Sundance and Heber Valley are a short drive away.

Central Orem: classic ranch and split-level homes on mature, tree-lined streets.
UVU and University Place area: condos, townhomes and newer mixed-use development near the campus and the mall.

History of Orem

The land that is now Orem was known for decades as the Provo Bench, a farming area of orchards irrigated by canals from the Provo River. The town incorporated in 1919 and was named for Walter C. Orem, president of the interurban railroad that ran through the valley. Orem grew quickly after World War II as the Geneva steel plant brought jobs to the area, and the fruit orchards gradually gave way to neighborhoods, the university and a busy retail corridor along State Street.
