Magna is a community of about 30,000 people on the far west side of the Salt Lake Valley, at the north end of the Oquirrh Mountains. It began as a mining and mill town, and its historic Main Street still has that small-town character. Buyers find older homes with character, newer west-side subdivisions and prices that are often lower than in much of Salt Lake County.

Where Is Magna, Utah?

Magna sits west of West Valley City and Kearns, with the Oquirrh Mountains to the south and west and the Great Salt Lake a few miles north. SR-201 runs along the north side of Magna toward Salt Lake City, and I-80 and the airport are about 15 minutes away. Downtown Salt Lake City is about 20 minutes east.

Historic Main Street: older homes from the early 1900s near Magna's restored downtown.
Central Magna: established family neighborhoods near parks and schools.
West Magna: newer subdivisions and townhomes toward the Oquirrh foothills.
South Magna: homes near the Kearns border with views of the mountains.

History of Magna

Farm families settled this corner of the valley in the 1850s, but Magna grew up around copper. In the early 1900s the Utah Copper Company built a large mill here to process ore from the Bingham Canyon Mine, and the town took its name from the Magna mill. Workers from many countries came to the mills and smelter, giving Magna a diverse, close-knit community. Its Main Street is now a historic district, and in 2017 Magna became a self-governing metro township.
