Kearns is a community of about 36,000 people in the west Salt Lake Valley, below the Oquirrh Mountains. Most of its homes were built from the 1950s through the 1980s, and it is often one of the more affordable places to buy in Salt Lake County. Buyers like its parks, its central location and the Utah Olympic Oval, where Olympic speed skaters still train.

Where Is Kearns, Utah?

Kearns sits between West Valley City to the north, Taylorsville to the east, West Jordan to the south and Magna to the west. Bangerter Highway runs along its east side and the Mountain View Corridor along its west, with I-215 a few minutes north. Downtown Salt Lake City and the airport are each about 20 minutes away, and Lehi about 30 minutes south.

Central Kearns: established homes near the Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center and the Utah Olympic Oval.
East Kearns: family neighborhoods near Bangerter Highway and the Taylorsville border.
West Kearns: neighborhoods toward the Mountain View Corridor and Magna, including some newer homes.
South Kearns: homes near the West Jordan border and local schools and parks.

History of Kearns

During World War II the Army built Camp Kearns here as a training base, and tens of thousands of servicemen passed through it. After the war the base closed and the land was turned into one of the valley's first large housing developments, with homes for returning veterans and young families. Kearns later became home to the Utah Olympic Oval, built for the 2002 Winter Olympics, and today it is a self-governing metro township.
