Mosida is a ghost town on the southwestern shore of Utah Lake in Utah County, with one of the most unusual origin stories of any community in the state. The name itself is an acronym — formed from the first two letters of the surnames of the three men who purchased the land from the Utah State Land Board in 1909: R.E. Morrison, Joseph Simpson, and J.E. Davis. Their plan was to divide the land into tracts for peach orchards, but they quickly sold out to Denver promoters who incorporated as the Mosida Fruit Lands Company. The new company invested heavily — building a pumphouse at the lake's edge, digging irrigation ditches, constructing a boarding house for up to 250 workers, and planting 50,000 fruit trees across 8,000 plowed acres by 1912. Despite that ambitious start, the project ultimately failed as the land west of Utah Lake proved too challenging to farm sustainably without reliable water. Today the townsite sits in remote open terrain near the lake's southwestern shore, surrounded by wide views across Utah Lake and the Wasatch Mountains beyond. The nearest inhabited community is Elberta, about 12 miles to the south.
