Mercur is a ghost town in Tooele County with a layered and fascinating history stretching back to 1870, when gold was discovered at the head of Lewiston Canyon about six miles west of present-day Cedar Fort. The original settlement, known as Lewiston, experienced a brief gold rush peaking around 1873 before silver brought a second boom — producing over a million dollars in silver bullion before the ore gave out and the town went quiet by 1880. The area was reborn when Bavarian miner Arie Pinedo discovered cinnabar deposits containing both gold and mercury in 1879, and by 1891 Mercur had become the site of the first successful use of the cyanide gold extraction process in the United States — a metallurgical breakthrough that transformed gold mining across the country. The town was later destroyed by fire, rebuilt, and ultimately abandoned as the ore played out. The nearby Mercur Gold Mine was reopened by Barrick Gold in 1985 and has since undergone reclamation. Today the townsite sits on private mining land in a remote Oquirrh Mountain canyon, making it one of Utah's more inaccessible but historically significant ghost town sites. The surrounding terrain offers open land and dramatic mountain scenery that appeals to buyers seeking remote Tooele County acreage.
