Where Is Mammoth, Utah?

Mammoth sits in Mammoth Canyon on the west flank of the East Tintic Mountains in northeastern Juab County, about 3 miles south of Eureka at an elevation of 6,400 feet.

Mammoth History

Mammoth was founded around 1870 after the discovery of the Mammoth Mine, and it grew quickly as miners rushed into the Tintic Mining District, one of the most productive mining regions in the American West.

Life there was hard. There was no natural water nearby, so residents bought drinking water hauled in at ten cents a gallon while the mines piped in water for their own operations. Even so, the Mammoth Mine stayed in production for about 75 years and supported around 3,000 residents at its peak.

Today a handful of people still call Mammoth home, and the remnants of the old mining town are scattered across the hillside. The canyon country around it offers solitude and open land for hunters, off-road riders, and buyers looking for remote Utah acreage in the Tintic Valley.
