Mammoth is a semi-ghost town in northeastern Juab County, located about 3 miles south of Eureka and nestled in Mammoth Canyon on the west flank of the East Tintic Mountains at an elevation of 6,400 feet. Founded around 1870 following the discovery of the Mammoth Mine, the town grew rapidly as miners rushed into the area during the boom and bust mining cycle of the American West. The setting was remote and unforgiving — no natural water source existed nearby, forcing residents to purchase drinking water hauled in at ten cents a gallon while the mines piped in water separately for industrial operations. Despite those hardships, the Mammoth Mine remained in production for approximately 75 years, producing silver, gold, and ore as part of the broader Tintic Mining District that made this corner of Utah Territory one of the most economically significant mining regions in the American West. Today a handful of residents still call the area home, and the surrounding canyon terrain at elevation offers dramatic landscapes, solitude, and open land that attracts hunters, off-road enthusiasts, and buyers seeking remote Utah acreage in the Tintic Valley.
