Bingham was once a thriving city in southwestern Salt Lake County, carved into a narrow canyon on the eastern face of the Oquirrh Mountains. The canyon takes its name from brothers Thomas and Sanford Bingham, who arrived in 1848 and initially used the land for livestock grazing and logging. The discovery of gold and silver ore in 1863 and the completion of a railroad to the canyon in 1873 set off a mining boom that ultimately shifted focus to the rich copper deposits that would define the area's legacy. At its peak in the 1920s, Bingham was home to approximately 15,000 residents spread across seven miles of steep canyon floor — a remarkably dense urban community of diverse ethnic neighborhoods including Carr Fork, Highland Boy, Copperfield, and dozens of smaller named communities reflecting the many immigrant groups who came to work the mines. The town was officially incorporated on February 29, 1904, and Daniel C. Jackling's organization of the Utah Copper Company in 1903 marked the turning point that would both make the city thrive and eventually seal its fate. As the open-pit Bingham Canyon Mine expanded through the mid-to-late twentieth century, it gradually consumed the entire townsite. Today no trace of the former city remains — swallowed entirely by what became one of the largest open-pit copper mines in the world. The surrounding Oquirrh Mountain terrain offers open land and dramatic canyon scenery for buyers seeking remote Salt Lake County acreage.
